We are Aidan and Cruz, two cousins from Arlington, Virginia. Aidan is a Soccer Coach for Vienna Youth Soccer’s Junior’s program. In 2019 he studied abroad in Havana for a semester in 2019 and played soccer for the university. Cruz is a rising sophomore at UVA that has worked at Camp Sarraka for three years.
Our goal is to raise $2,500 for a children’s soccer tournament in Havana, Cuba. The money will be used to buy soccer equipment (goals, cones, and jersey’s), checked baggage for bringing the equipment there, water, and snacks. The tournament will take place June 14th-15th. We will have some practice sessions with the kids the week before the tournament to prepare them.
Why Cuba? Aidan studied abroad in Havana for a semester in 2019 and played soccer for the University. He was able to experience some of the strengths and hardships of society in Havana and participate in the countries developing soccer culture. The hospitality of the Cuban people left a lasting impression on him and he wants to share some of his skills as a soccer coach to the community that took him in as a study abroad student. He would also like to share this experience with his younger cousin Cruz.
Can Cruz and Aidan enter Cuba? The US State Department allows US Citizens to enter Cuba if they fall under 12 categories of authorized travel (https://cu.usembassy.gov/services/traveling-to-cuba/#:~:text=The%252012%2520categories%2520of%2520authorized,%253B%2520religious%2520activities%253B%2520public%2520performances%252C). This trip falls under multiple categories including humanitarian efforts, athletic competitions, and support for the Cuban people.
